Nov 14 Auction Item Preview: A fine 1930s-40s NYC street scene at night by listed artist John Bentz. Great use of lighting in the streetlights and sundown sky. A figure of an older gentleman is in the foreground, with other figures, cars, and a double decker bus in the distance. I believe the very left edge shows a gothic church. There are no more WPA era examples of Bentz in any sales records I can find. But, he was clearly a part of the program as this painting has the original Federal Arts Project label still attached to reverse of stretcher. This is everything you want from a WPA regionalis painting of NYC.
